Week #22 - Bowen

After a brief visit to Yeppoon and Mackay, we arrived to Bowen.

We initially hadn’t had Bowen on our to-go list although we heard about it as a town of murals. It proved true to its name and they were absolutely wonderful to see. And don’t forget the giant mangoes. Those were cool.

However, the biggest treat of the town are the two absolutely amazing kite spots. Finally! And the wind forecast was promising too! And to add oil to the flame, we had purchased two new kites and awaited the delivery to … you guessed it… Bowen!

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! We were excited!

And if that wasn’t enough, Bowen is a hop, skip and a jump away from Airlie Beach and Whitsundays. Definitely on our bucket list.

The icing on the cake for the girls was meeting some new friends. We don’t always meet fellow travelling families with kids of similar age as our girls and it is amazing to see how they light up when they make friends.

We joined forces and took all the kids for a hike around Horseshoe bay and for a change it was us, adults, who had trouble keeping up. What a team they were!

Here’s a link to the adventures of the day.

Now back to the kiting bit. I am still in seventh heaven. As mentioned before, there are two kite spots in the area. One near the sailing club and the other at the mouth of the river Don. The city site has playgrounds and public water parks right on the beach! How cool is that!

Don river mouth gave us a reality check first. Stingers and crocodiles. Welcome to North Queensland!

It’s never a bad idea to brush up on basic safety and First Aid tips when you come to areas like these, although when it comes to crocs, common sense will have to do. Stay away from muddy, murky rivers for starters. Be croc wise. Just saying.

As for stingers, lucky for us its not stinger season (Nov-Mar) but having long sleeves on and vinegar handy will not go amiss.

When in Rome (Bowen), you have to take a pic with the supersized mango. Tick! :)

Not kiddin'! Welcome to North Queensland! ;D
Couldn't wait to fly it. So excited about the new kites. She flew well and true.

Tranquillity of the bay. Loving this....

Testing the 9m North Orbit. I'm so in love with this kite!

So good to be back on the water!

Romance, kiteboarding style. LOL! His and hers boards, drying off after session.

Balancing stones art in Horseshoe Bay.

The mischevious gang! It's so great to make new friends on your travels.
